Scottish Borders Council tenders £22m+ flood prevention construction contract

The Scottish Borders Council has gone out to tender with a £22m+ flood prevention construction contract for main works on the Selkirk flood protection scheme.

The Selkirk scheme is intended to provide a significant improvement in flood protection to over 650 residential and business properties in Selkirk and its environs.

The scope of the project includes adaption of the outlet at St Mary's Loch to improve the loch's flood storage capabilities, including MEICA upgrades, telemetry and small scale flood resilience and flood protection works around the loch (flood defence bunds, access track raising). Other work included in the scheme cover:

  • Raising of 200m of the A708 Selkirk to Moffat road
  • Construction of 2.9km of imported fill flood defence embankments
  • Construction of 3.1km of reinforced concrete flood defence walls
  • Construction of 0.38km of sheet piled retaining wall in dense gravelly soils
  • Construction of approx. 0.72km of erosion protection to the banks of the Ettrick Water in three separate locations.
  • Provision of 3.0km of Contractor design seepage protection, up to 8.0m below ground level
  • Construction of 0.8km of new 7m wide river channel, offline from existing watercourse
  • Online widening of 0.15km of existing watercourse
  • Construction of 110m long offline storm overflow culvert and new inlet and outlet structures

The contract wil run for 26 months and is worth an estimated £22,700,000.

The Council is looking to invite a minimum of five contractors to tender for the work.
